Bookmarklet Maker

What is a Bookmarklet?

A bookmarklet, also known as a favelet, is a small program embedded in a link. You can add it to your bookmarks (or favorites), just like any other link. Most bookmarklets are used from the links toolbar available with most browsers. This page lets you create a custom bookmarklet for quick access to the Translation Wizard. To use this bookmarklet maker, follow the steps below.

Powerful Customization

This page allows you quite a lot of customization. I have tried to make this page simple to understand, but if you are having trouble, then try this: choose the options that make the most sense to you, and then try it out. You can then decide on changes you want to make, delete the old one, and add the new. You can, of course, create as many of these bookmarklets as you can; you only need to give each a different name.

Step 1

Here you can choose a from language, or one of two special options (these are listed at the top, above the languages), which are more flexible. Identify means that before translation you will be taken to the language identification page. This is useful if you don’t know the language of what you want to translate. Prompt, otherwise identify asks you (each time you use the bookmarklet) to type in the name (or ISO code) of the language you are translating from. If you don’t know it (in this case, you should type nothing), then it will act just like identify.

Step 2

Here you can choose a to language, or a special option (listed at the top, above the languages). Prompt asks you (each time you use the bookmarklet) to type in the name (or ISO code) of the language you want to translate into. This is more flexible than limiting yourself to one language.

Step 3

Choose what you want to translate
Both these options start the same: they check to see if you have selected text on the web page you are viewing. If you have, then that text will be translated. If you have not selected any text, then, if you have chosen the first option (selected text, otherwise the current web page), the web page you are viewing will be translated. If you have chosen the first option, and you have not selected any text, then you will be asked to type in text, and that text will be translated. If, in that case, you do not type any text, then the web page you are viewing will be translated.

Step 4

See About the Results Display for an explanation of this.

Step 5

Choose where you want the translation to open
