Teoma Toolbar
The search engine Teoma, now owned by Ask Jeeves, has released a toolbar. A toolbar is a browser add-on for Internet Explorer. Two popular toolbars exist already, Google's toolbar and Alexa's toolbar. Teoma's has several features: Teoma web search, dictionary lookup (with Merriam-Webster), highlighter words (just like Google's), and e-mail a page to a friend. Via VAS&ND.

Overture soon to have Auto Bidding
Overture, a pay-per-click search engine, will soon introduce an 'auto bidding' feature so that marketers will only pay one cent more than the next-highest bid. AOL & Inktomi Spammed
AOL Search and Inktomi (which AOL uses as a database, but not for long), were spammed by thousands of results from a Russian website on Wednesday. The technique used was to copy others' pages, and include meta tags for daily recrawling but no indexing. I don't see why Inktomi would fall for this, but anyway they have removed the pages from their database. Update: I was right, it seems that the author of the article doesn't really know what he's talking about.

An overview article on Ask Jeeves. It includes information about Ask Jeeves' new paid inclusion programs, Index Express, and Site Submit. Stumbleupon - Rate Sites and Find Others
Stumbleupon is a toolbar that installs into your browser, apparently in IE, Netscape 7, and Mozilla. Similar to the Google Toolbar, you rate pages by clicking a thumbs up, a thumbs down, or two thumbs up. Clicking on the Stumble! button takes you to a page which has been rated highly by people who also rated highly the websites you did. In other words, you can stumble upon websites you wouldn't have otherwise found, but fit your interests.

Google says Overture's Patent is Invalid
Google, who is currently being sued by Overture for patent infringement, is asking a federal judge to invalidate Overture's patent. The patent is on Overture's system of having advertisers bid for placement for keywords on its search engine. Google recently implemented a similar system for advertisements (not search results). Google says that Overture used this system for over a year before applying for a patent. Pay-per-click search engine FindWhat, who is also being sued by Overture, also accuses the patent of being invalid. From Bloomberg via Moreover - Online Search Engines News.

AltaVista Innovations
The German website @-Web reports on numerous innovations at AltaVista. Using Google's translation of the page, I gather the following information. The index is becoming fresher and larger. @-Web reports that the index contains 901 million pages, The Industry Standard reports 1.1 billion. According to AltaVista, they do a "total recrawl," crawling from scratch instead of recrawling existing links as other engines do. AltaVista has also changed the descriptions of websites in results. They will (some do already) contain excerpts from the page rather than just meta description tags. These are nice innovations, but I doubt that this will do much to AltaVista's downward trend in popularity (less than 4% according to OneStat).

Yahoo! Redesign
Yahoo! has a beta version of a redesign for its home page. This is arguably Yahoo!'s biggest redesign ever. The purpose is to simplify and increase the prominence of the advertisements. Now scrolling is required just to view Yahoo's directory.

How Google Innovates
Great article on Fast Company about Google's internal method for innovating. Apparently every Google employee, regardless of position, is encouraged to participate in Google's internal ideas website. Marissa Mayer, product manager at Google, looks through the website. Every Friday there is a one hour meeting where employees can present their ideas. Via Daypop Top 40.

Yahoo May Switch from Google to Fast
Yahoo, which currently uses Google as a back-up search engine, may be switching to Fast. The Yahoo-Google contract is expiring, and Yahoo now views Google as a potential competitor. Inktomi is the third but unlikely prospect. MSN is also considering switching from Inktomi to Fast. From Hegnar Online via Webmaster World.

AllTheWeb includes 'PDF only' Option
AllTheWeb, which recently added PDF (Portable Document Format) files to its index, now has a checkbox on the advanced search page to restrict searches to PDF files only. Google is the only other major search engine with this option.

Fast Breaks 2 Billion Pages
Fast Search's index now contains over two billion pages. Google is the only other search engine that has reached that milestone. Lycos Search, which uses Fast's index is also showing two billion plus pages. The number of pages in both Fast's and Google's index fluctuates, however at the moment Fast's seems to be larger (2.1 billion vs 2.07). Google's number includes unindexed URLs, so Fast has indexed more pages than Google. Fast actually crawled 6-8 billion pages before removing spam and duplicates. Many sources have speculated that Google will soon increase the size of their index in response.
