As previously reported, the US Federal Trade Commision requested that a number of search engines distinguish their paid links more clearly. This article from the Associated Press follows up on the search engine's reactions. One change is that AltaVista now labels paid links as "sponsored matches."

This article interestingly mentions that only about 1% of searches on Google make use of advanced search features. Plenty of other statistics (mainly France and French related) can be found with the article from a Panorama eStat/@position report.

Everyone's Using Google
Another article about how everyone uses Google. The article mentions that queries "spike" on Sunday nights (i.e. before homework is due). The database sizes mentioned in the article are rather outdated, and the article's search tips are so-so. The article is about Google, however one example is word1 AND word2, which is not proper syntax for Google. The article mentions Mamma as a newcomer, however it has been around for several years (and it is not a search engine).

Use "OR" or "|" on Google
You can now use | instead of OR as a boolean operator on Google. For example, "joe smith" | "smith, joe" instead of "joe smith" OR "smith, joe". From J Ruderman via Google Weblog.
